  3. This is Unix file /public/doc/README.
  4.  
  5. /public/bin is a directory containing Unix programs supported by a group
  6. of volunteer custodians here at Adobe. /public/bin currently contains such
  7. programs as ispell, Lucid Emacs, Emacs 19, olvwm, tex, dvips, new versions
  8. of gcc and gdb and many others.
  9.

  11. USER'S GUIDE:
  12.  
  13. 1. TO USE /public/bin:
  14.    a. add /public/bin to your $path (csh) or $PATH (sh)
  15.    b. add /public/man to your $MANPATH
  16.    c. add /public/lib/X11/%T/%N%S to your $XFILESEARCHPATH
  17.  
  18.    If your system does not have a /public or /public/bin, ask helpdesk
  19.    to create one for you.  This is the only support ISCF provides for
  20.    /public.
  21.  
  22. 2. TO GET MESSAGES about /public/bin:
  23.  
  24.    Use your favorite newsreader to read newsgroup:

  26.     adobe.public-software
  27.  
  28.    If you prefer to receive messages as mail:

  30.     send aliasmgr a message with body:

  34. 3. TO REPORT BUGS IN /public:

  49. 4. If you have a Unix program that you want to share with the whole Unix
  50.    community, you might want to think about becoming a public software
  51.    custodian and placing your program on /public/bin. This effort will not
  52.    work if people do not help. To become a public software custodian,
  53.    contact Jeff Finger.

  55. 5. See file /public/bin/README.TXT for a description of the
  56.    programs present.  If you need a program that is not available for
  57.    your system, contact the custodian listed in the file.

  60. POLICY:
  61.  
  62.     NO NAME CONFLICTS:
  63.     In order for be able to add /public/bin to PATH without
  64.     causing any unforseen effects on the current working environment,
  65.     programs on /public/bin shall not conflict in name those in
  66.     /usr/local/bin, /usr/ucb/bin, /usr/bin, /bin, or other standard
  67.     system directories.
  68.  
  69.     UPDATING:
  70.     Every attempt will be made to maintain and update /public/bin
  71.     keeping in mind that many people will be depending on this
  72.     directory.
  73.  
  74.     README.TXT:
  75.     All programs in /public/bin will have an entry in
  76.     /public/bin/README.TXT or be subject to deletion.

  79. NOTABLE FILES AND DIRECTORIES:

  81. /public/bin.orignames
  82.     There is another directory /public/bin.orignames which contains
  83.     names of executables that might conflict with /usr/local/bin
  84.     names. Please note that having /public/bin.orignames on your path can
  85.     change behavior of many things, for example, a "make" of the
  86.     2ps world.
